October 24, 1 Comment Builders, A friend of ours who is building a Zenith wrote in with a quick note asking about oil pressure gauges and senders. I pulled together this general set of notes on oil pressure measurement and instruments as a good resource on the general subject. Going back to my point of Principle vs Preference. On this subject, it mostly falls in the category of preference. The Builders specific question was focused on sending units for electrical gauges, and their reliability. If I had to pick one brand over another, I will say that I have never had an issue with the senders that are used in Autometer gauges. Some people are concerned about mechanical gauges bringing oil into the cockpit, but in actual experience, I have never had an issue with it. For the record, I have never seen even the poorest mechanical line installations leak. Below is the close up of the mechanical oil pressure gauge I have in the Wagabond.
The Right Way to Wire Up Gauges for Your Classic Chevy
Simply using a switched power source, especially one that is hot in the ACC position, can cause the choke to open prematurely if the key is on but the engine is not running. GM used two different methods, depending on the vehicle. Most used an oil pressure switch in the power line to the choke. This way, the choke doesn’t start to heat up until the engine is running and there is oil pressure.
May 15, · I have been told GM trucks have the common problem of the oil pressure switches or senders going bad or something. My truck for the past month the pressure on the gauge goes up and down to the zero, sometimes staying at 0 and the check gauges light comes on.
Fuel control system Other parts affecting the combustion process emission devices, etc. Each has a characteristic effect on vacuum and you judge their performance by watching variations from normal. It is important to judge engine performance by the general location and action of the needle on a vacuum gauge, rather than just by a vacuum reading. Gauge readings that may be found are as follows: Normal Engine Operation At idling speed, an engine at sea level should show a steady vacuum reading between 17″ and 21″ HG.
A quick opening and closing of the throttle should cause vacuum to drop below 5″ then rebound to 21″ or more. General Ignition Troubles Or Sticking Valves With the engine idling, continued fluctuation of 1 to 2 inches may indicate an ignition problem. Check the spark plugs, spark plug gap, primary ignition circuit, high tension cables, distributor cap or ignition coil. Fluctuations of 3 to 4 inches may be sticking valves. Intake System Leakage, Valve Timing, Or Low Compression Vacuum readings at idle much lower than normal can indicate leakage through intake manifold gaskets, manifold-to-carburetor gaskets, vacuum brakes or the vacuum modulator.
Low readings could also be very late valve timing or worn piston rings. Exhaust Back Pressure Starting with the engine at idle, slowly increase engine speed to 3, RPM, engine vacuum should be equal to or higher than idle vacuum at 3, RPM. If vacuum decreases at higher engine RPM’s, an excessive exhaust back pressure is probably present. Cylinder Head Gasket Leakage With the engine Idling, the vacuum gauge pointer will drop sharply, every time the leak occurs.

Carter himself to discuss the issues at hand. Furthermore, he offered to supply me with the correct oil pressure gauge face the existing one was for a high-pressure with a matching Ammeter face, completing the required components for the restoration. These days, that can still apply to things associated with electronics, and this was no exception. Taking the stock gauge cluster out and apart was a bit of a chore, mainly because a majority of time was spent suspended upside-down with the back of my head pressed firmly against the clutch pedal minus the rubber pad!
Anything over 50 years of age requires care when being handled, so a lot of caution was taken when the tiny screws holding the temp gauge were undone, the nuts on the back of the electrical posts were loosened, and the bezel split from the cluster housing, among many other things.
Yoiu can hook the mechanical gauge where the original sending unit is or down by the oil filtelr, there should be a large plug to remove and hook up the gauge tehre. If you go back to the first post I told you how to test to see if your gauge or sending unit is bad.
How do you hook up a battery to a 78 Chevy? Alot of cables have other connections on them ie. If your black cable for example, has an extra small black wire on it – it too needs to be attached to the same place or near by to the chasis grounded Good Luck. On the distributor cap there is an extension that juts outtoward the driver side. Red to switched power, black to good ground, yellow is switched light anything that comes on when the light switch is activated.

The original gauge package that I selected for my roadster in the s consisted of manual gauges for the oil pressure, water temperature, and speedometer readings because I was using a magneto in my Buick Nailhead-powered roadster. I also had an ammeter with a amp maximum range that is no longer adequate for my new amp alternator.
These factors and the change to a new Crane conversion-equipped, Russell Martin rebuilt Buick distributor called for the update to some new gauges. I ran mechanical gauges in my small-block Chevy-powered Deuce Vicky for eight years without any problems.
No VW van ever came from the factory with an oil pressure gauge or oil level indicator, just a low oil pressure warning light. One-switch system: When the engine is not running and there is no oil pressure at all, with the ignition switch in the ON position, the oil pressure warning light comes on.
Get your Oil Pressure Sensor changed by a top-rated mechanic at the convenience of your home or office. Without the proper amount of oil, your engine will sustain major damage. Multiple systems in your car are designed to maintain the correct engine oil level and pressure. In order for the engine computer to regulate the flow of oil, the oil pressure sensor needs to work correctly. The oil pressure sensor is hooked directly to the oil pressure gauge on your instrument cluster.
When lower than normal oil pressure is detected, the pressure sensor will make the gauge in the car reflect this change. An Oil Pressure Warning Light will often accompany oil pressure sensor faults. Like any other sensor or switch in your engine, eventually the oil pressure sensor will have repair issues that need to be addressed. Failing to recognize the symptoms of a bad oil pressure sensor can lead to low oil levels , which can be very problematic for your engine.
If the Low Oil Light comes on , but you check the oil in the engine and it’s at a good level, then a faulty oil pressure sensor may be to blame. When this sensor goes bad, it will start to give inaccurate readings. After the readings fall out of specification, a warning light is set. The faster this sensor can be replaced, the less stress you will have regarding the oil levels in your vehicle.

Forward Clutch Pack Installation Step 1: Install the forward clutch pack steels and frictions. Note that you start out with a waved apply steel.
Sep 26, · Fully warmed up the Oil pressure will be about 10 @ idle and @ RPM. It sounds like your okay, but your sensor might be going bad. the dash gauge in these trucks is a joke to say the least. I have an aftermarket gauge and I can see even a 1 lb. change.
Hopefully this will makes things a bit smoother and give you a better understanding of the troubleshooting process. There is also a downloadable guide to assist you! Gauges are the eyes into the performance of our marine systems, not only do they provide us with normal operating information but can warn us of impending danger.
That temperature gauge that seems to creep up a bit more on each trip to the lake may be hinting at a water pump impeller failure. But for those gauges to be useful they have to work. Troubleshooting marine gauges is not as hard as you would think if you are equipped with the proper knowledge, so let? Many of the older boats still have the thermometer type temperature gauges, mechanical oil pressure and rpm gauges.
In most cases if the temperature gauge fails on these you will have to replace the whole unit. The oil pressure gauges on these older boats have a small hollow line that connect to the back of the gauge and is routed to a fitting on the engine. The line feeds oil up to the back gauge where the pressure is converted to a display on the gauge.

Engine Stand Project I decided that it would be nice to have an engine run-in stand. Plus, its fun to build things. A friend donated some extra casters he had. The stand needs to be high enough so that the legs of your engine hoist will roll below.

The following instructions are for creating a MegaSquirt to Relay Board cable. It is for those who are creating their own harness. With both boxes mounted, measure the distance between them from DB connector to DB connector – this will be the length that you will cut the individual wires. If you are not using a Relay Board, allow enough length in each of your wires to reach the target component.
It is often better to be too long and trim afterwards, than to be too short and have to splice additional lengths on. For a Relay Board cable, you can move both heat shrink pieces to the center of the wire length, and then twisting the center of the wire with a few twists to hold the heat shrink in place, so that it does not fall off the wire or run down while soldering the connection.
For a pigtail, you can slip the heat shrink tubing on later. Orient them so that both are facing the same way, with pins 1 – 19 closest to you. You will definitely want something to hold the connector, since as you attach more wires it wants to move around more, while at the same time you have less room to solder. Having it held stable helps a lot. Run one wire from pin 7 to pin 7 there are numbers on the plastic surrounding the connector’s pins and solder both ends.
Answers for The Question matomotive It is on the top of the motor behind the distributor against the firewall it will have a wire or two on it and should be easy to find but hard to get at. Aug 01, · Hey everyone! I have released an updated version of this video with more general information. If you are working on something other than a small .
If the indication is full the sender is bad. If all else fails, read the book, although it will probably tell you the same thing. BTW, it does not matter the model, all old Mopars are likely to use a similar setup. If you want to see how fast your oil pressure is really rising, get a mechanical actually, hydro-mechanical gauge and temporarily install it in the same location as your electrical gauge sending unit.
I have one I use for testing oil pressure and pumps on freshly rebuilt but not yet operated engines. In my experience, the pressure comes up to full relief valve setting within one rotation of the oil pump shaft. Here’s how to check it:
Oil Pressure gauge jumps around, settles to 0
If your seat rocks forward and backward as you drive, first, for safety, check the four bolts that hold the two seat track rails to your floor. You’ll need a metric allen wrench, a flashlight, and some dexterity that’s a joke. Make certain that you actually have all 4 bolts on driver and passenger seats, and verify that they are tight and no rust, no broken rails, etc.
If proper, then move on. Next, check your seat back positioner.

How to Install an Engine Water Temp Gauge by David Young An aftermarket temperature gauge can be installed as a supplement to or replacement for the existing temperature indicator in your vehicle. Many new cars use high and low temperature lights instead of traditional gauges. While the lights will alert you to dangerous temperatures, they do not provide information about the operating temperature of the vehicle.
Adding a temperature gauge will allow you to monitor the temperature of your engine under different conditions and can give you an early warning of potential problems. Choose a location for the temperature gauge mounting hole on the vehicle dashboard. Ensure that the gauge will be visible and that no wires or hoses behind the dash will be damaged when drilling the mounting hole.

Try using a heavier grade oil. If you have been using a 5 W 15 oil, go to a 10 W If you’ve been using 10 W 30 try a 15 W If that doesn’t work try an oil thickener. You might be able to squeeze a little more service out of a failing engine if you have a thicker weight oil. If the oil pressure is up when the oil is cool, it’s not the oil pump..
With new plugs and wires numbered, battery removed or both cables disconnected, install HEI with printed guide in front of you, insuring each step is read 3 times, double-checked, before connecting battery. Why does a Chevy have good oil pressure but does not get any oil to the top of the motor? There are a couple possibilities:
